Training Visa (Subclass 407)
The Training Visa (Subclass 407) is a temporary visa that allows skilled individuals to participate in structured, workplace-based occupational training activities in Australia to enhance their skills, gain registration, or build international capacity.
This visa is designed for professionals and graduates who want to advance their career capabilities through a tailored, supervised training program provided by an approved Australian sponsor.
At Jurist Migration, we guide both Australian employers and international candidates through the complex three-stage process: sponsorship, nomination with a comprehensive training plan, and individual visa lodgement.
Three Nomination Streams
Applicants must be nominated under one of three specific occupational training streams depending on their training objective.
Workplace Training for Registration / Licensing
For individuals who require mandatory workplace-based training to obtain professional registration, licensing, or membership in Australia or their home country.
The training must be a mandatory statutory requirement to practice the occupation.
Workplace Training to Enhance Skills
The most common stream. For skilled candidates nominated in an eligible occupation who need tailored workplace training to improve their professional capabilities.
Requires at least 12 months of full-time study or work experience in the occupation within the last 24 months.
Training for Capacity Building Overseas
Designed for overseas students needing up to 6 months of practical training to complete a degree, or government-supported professionals and managers on tailored development programs.
The Three-Stage Application Process
Obtaining a Subclass 407 visa requires three distinct legal steps approved by the Department of Home Affairs.
Temporary Activities Sponsorship (TAS)
The Australian host organization or employer must apply for and be approved as a Temporary Activities Sponsor (TAS) before they can nominate a trainee.
Nomination & Structured Training Plan
The sponsor lodges a nomination including a detailed, curriculum-aligned Training Plan that outlines specific learning modules, supervisory arrangements, and skill assessment milestones.
Visa Application
The applicant submits the visa application showing they meet functional English, background experience, health, character, and genuine temporary stay requirements.
Applicant Eligibility Requirements
Important Notice: The Subclass 407 Training Visa is not a standard work visa. The training plan must clearly justify how the structured workplace activities enhance the nominee's skills rather than merely filling a labor vacancy.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Training Visa (Subclass 407)?
The Subclass 407 visa is a temporary visa that allows eligible individuals to undertake structured, workplace-based occupational training in Australia for up to 2 years to enhance skills in their current occupation, tertiary study area, or field of expertise.
How long can I stay on a Subclass 407 visa?
The visa is granted for the duration of the approved training program, up to a maximum period of 2 years.
Can my family members be included in my 407 application?
Yes. Eligible family members (spouse/de facto partner and dependent children) can be included in the application. Secondary visa holders are generally permitted to work up to 40 hours per fortnight.
Can a Subclass 407 visa lead to a 482 or PR visa?
While the 407 visa itself does not have a direct automatic PR pathway, the full-time workplace experience and skills gained during the training program can help you meet the work experience and skills assessment requirements for employer-sponsored visas (such as Subclass 482 or 494) or skilled points-tested pathways.
What is a Structured Training Plan?
A Structured Training Plan is a critical document prepared by the sponsor detailing the trainee's current skill level, target learning outcomes, weekly timetable of workplace training (minimum 30 hours per week), dedicated supervisor qualifications, and progressive assessment methods.
